Wyoming is formed from the portions of Utah, Dakota and Idaho regions.Wyoming is formed from the portions of Utah, Dakota and Idaho regions. Wyoming means "on the great plains," or "at the big plains," which was used in 1865 by J.M. Ashley of Ohio [1]. He introduced a bill to Congress to provide a temporary government for the Wyoming. Wyoming has three distinct branches that are as follows: the Executive branch, the Legislative branch, the judicial branch and state agencies. The state's chief executive is a governor who holds a term of four years after winning election.

The Executive Branch of Wyoming consists of Governor, Secretary of State, State Auditor, State Treasurer and Superintendent of Public Instruction and state agencies like Health Department, Revenue Department, Insurance Department, Wyoming Department of Family Services, Wyoming Department of Agriculture and Wyoming Department of Transportation etc

Governor of Wyoming

The Governor of the State of Wyoming is the head of the executive branch of Wyoming Government. The Governor is elected every four years by a plurality. There is no limit to the number of terms that can be served.

Attorney General

Attorney General of Wyoming serves as the attorney and legal advisor for authorities, the Governor, all state agencies and departments. It can initiate civil or criminal actions on behalf of the State of Wyoming when requested to do so by the Governor. By law the Attorney General does not provide legal advice to private citizens.

State Auditor

The State Auditor is the payroll officer and chief accountant. The Auditor promotes the state of Wyoming’s financial accountability. Assisting agencies to account for public money responsibly and promoting transparency in the State’s finances are top priorities.

Treasurer has full authority to invests all funds of the State, except for the State Retirement funds, and including the local government investment pool. He serves on board of Deposits, Land Commissioners, Loan and Investment Board and State Canvassing Board.

The Judicial Branch consists of District Court, Circuit Courts and the highest court in the State which is known as ‘’Supreme Court’’.

Supreme Court of Wyoming

The Supreme Court of Wyoming is located in Cheyenne.The Supreme Court of Wyoming is located in Cheyenne. The court system of Wyoming is efficiently managed by the Wyoming Supreme Court. The court is responsible to make effective rules and policies for the appropriate working of the entire court system. The Supreme Court takes appeals from decisions of the district courts and it also hear petitions from lower court decisions. It has main authority to take cases against the state and to issue writs of mandamus, review, habeas corpus and prohibition. The five justices together select the chief justice who serves a four year term.

District Courts of Wyoming

A district court exists in all 23 counties, and the counties are organized into nine judicial districts. They also hear appeals from lower court decisions. The district judges handles cases like large civil cases, felony criminal cases, as well as probate and juvenile matters.The district court is also known as the people's court. The district court hears most landlord-tenant matters, all civil cases with claims up to $50,000, traffic violations and all felony cases. Also hearings of small claims are heard by a division of the district court.

Circuit Courts of Wyoming

Circuit courts are the same as the nine judicial districts for the district courts, and there are circuit courts in all 23 counties. The circuit court hears all felony criminal cases and all civil cases with claims of more than $50,000. The main circuit court hears all cases of personal protection actions, juvenile guardianship, delinquency, juvenile offenses, treatment, adoptions, paternity, divorce, safe delivery of newborns and child abuse and neglect.

The Wyoming State Law Library works effectively to serve the Wyoming LegislatureThe Wyoming State Law Library works effectively to serve the Wyoming Legislature, members of the Wyoming State Bar Association, the Wyoming Judiciary, and the public.

The Law Library is closed on major holidays and will also be closed on any other holiday declared by the Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court.

Legislative Branch of Wyoming


The Wyoming State Legislature is the state legislature of Wyoming. It is a bicameral legislature, consisting of a 60 member Wyoming House of Representatives, and a 30 member Wyoming State Senate. The legislature meets at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne.

The Wyoming House of Representatives is the lower house of the Wyoming State Legislature, the state legislature of Wyoming. The Wyoming House includes 60 representatives. Representatives serve a two-year terms with no term limits.
